Peru and Bolivia 2017

Gerry and I are finally taking a trip that we had originally planned to take in 1985!

This journey will take us to elevations over 14,000 feet.  We will enjoy ceviche, learn to make pisco sours, dine at two of the top 50 restaurants in the world, visit several UNESCO World Heritage sites, learn new cultures and history, and add two more countries to our list of places to which we feel a connection and empathy as we read the latest news and stories around the world.

Our journey will begin in Lima, Peru where we plan to explore on our own for a few days before going 162 miles south to Paracas (driest desert in the world) to view a place where the desert meets the sea. 

We will take a flight over the Nazca Lines which are designs scratched into the desert.  These designs were drawn between 500 BC and 500 AD and are up to 1200 feet long making them impossible to see except from the air or surrounding foothills.  Why they were drawn, nobody knows.  Our evening will be spent taking a 4X4 adventure over the sand dunes followed by a luxury picnic under the stars


We will also visit the Ballestas Islands (the Galapagos of Peru) to observe sea lions, Humboldt penguins, birds and the Candelabra geoglyph (dated from 200 BC) carved into the sand on the side of a hill.


After we return to Lima for a few more days of exploring and fine dining, we meet our Tauck Tour “Empire of the Incas: Peru & Bolivia”.  Then we are off to visit Cusco, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca and La Paz, Bolivia.
We will be experiencing all of this with our friends, David & Deborah Wright who shared a South Africa experience with us in 2015. 

This will be our third trip to South America and we hope to have many more.

Lima to Cusco

Today we were on the move again. We flew from Lima to Cusco which is at an elevation of a little over 11,000 feet. We immediately loaded onto a bus and descended down to 9,000 feet to Urumbamba in the Sacred Valley. Hopefully this will help everyone  acclimate better to the high altitude. We had a lovely lunch at a private home (Huayocari Ranch) followed by a show of their Peruvian Paso horses, the horse with the smoothest gait in the world. Ballestas Islands and Return to Lima

Today was a travel day back to Lima. But first we went in a boat ride to the Ballestas Islands to see the birds, penguins and seals that nest on these islands. The islands are rock formations that are covered in white - guano - bird poop. Guano is an extremely important produce in Peru as studies dating back to the 19 th century have shown it to be an excellent fertilizer - up to 30 times better than cow dung. Now, if you were a country that focused on agriculture wouldn’t you fight over guano?  Well Perú did in the late 1860’s. On April 14, 1864, in retaliation for Peru's refusal to pay an indemnity, the Spanish fleet seized the lightly defended Chincha Islands . The islands were the principal source for Peruvian guano resources. The Spanish placed the islands' Peruvian governor Ramón Valle Riestra under arrest aboard the Resolución , occupied the islands with 400 marines, and raised the Spanish flag . Life on Lake Titicaca

We arrived in Puno after a flight from Cusco to Juliaca and a bus ride to Puno. Juliaca is known as the ugliest city in Peru. It is a place, due to its closeness to Bolivia, where there is much smuggling. There really was not a trace of beauty anywhere.  Puno, a city on the shores of Lake Titicaca is 12,600 feet altitude - the highest we have been on this trip. Our hotel has nice rooms that have a spectacular view of the Lake. We set an alarm for 5:00 am so we could capture a beautiful sunrise.  Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world. It is 116 miles long at its longest point and 42 miles in width. The deepest part is 930 feet deep. Lake Titikaka (spelled this way by indigenous people) means gray cat.  Life surrounding and on this lake is varied.
